Buxton Wool Gathering

Well, what a weekend! Buxton Wool Gathering took place on 11 and 12th May in the newly refurbished Octagon at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton.

The Guild had a stand on the stage and we spent the two days demonstrating all sorts of fibre art, talking about dyeing and weaving and showing visitors how to use hand carders and spin on a drop spindle and with a wheel.

Of primary importance on day 2, guild member and programme secretary Joy, decided it was time to have a go at learning to spin; as a perfectionist, she found her first efforts to be more akin to knicker elastic than yarn but she did go home with a dropspindle set from Cat and Sparrow and a determined attitude – we’re looking forward to seeing how she’s getting on at our next meeting.

We also had an exhibition of member’s projects – lots of handspun and hand dyed yarns, some dyed then spun and some and some spun then dyed. The naturally dyed yellow collection was much discussed and the solar dyeing was met with fascination from experienced dyers and novices alike. A wonderful display of patchwork quilts, felted hot water bottle covers and various knitted and crocheted garments was certainly eye catching – the fairisle knitted items were much admired. Also causing comment was the spicy mustard batt from @wildspinster which was being spun by one of our demonstrators and turning out to be delightfully tweedy.

As a relatively new guild it was wonderful to meet and chat to members of other guilds (Hi Notts and District, Derbyshire and Gwent) and be both invited to their meetings and give them a open invite to visit us.

Some of our weavers had their own stall Weavils-Ladies with Looms Kate, Linda, Val and Jude had a lot of very interested visitors and some breathtaking pieces. Kate had a wonderfully bright scarf on the loom woven with help from visitors and family members alike. My eye was particularly caught with the weaving kits and scarves Linda had put together but alas, I’ve not yet fallen down the weaving black hole – I do think it might be inevitable though.

The Chair and Committee want to offer a huge thanks to everyone who came along to Buxton Wool Gathering over the weeknd. We all had fun and met some lovely people, Joy , Martyn, Ashley, GemmaCarole, Annie and Jane also thanks to all who contributed to the amazing display, we looked great!
